30+ Examples of Christian Privilege
This is specifically about the United States, but may apply to other countries as well. Some examples I would add:
- You don’t have to be familiar with another faith’s scripture in order to “get” the allusions and references in the literature taught in high school English classes.
- Your faith is used in advertisements and common parlance as a synonym for “good” or “trustworthy.”
- You don’t have to constantly explain your religious beliefs, rituals, and holidays to others—and when you do explain, you don’t hear your faith and practices called “weird,” “exotic,” or “barbaric” in response.
These are all spot on. But I think it’s important with any kind of “privilege” that it not be used against people. Most never asked for it. What you can do is ask them to admit that it does exist.
