When I do tarot readings I first prepare
my altar, then I pull three cards from a tarot deck, and last I pull a card
from the Portals of Chaos. My taper candles over by my magical ancestors had burnt
down, so I reached over and grabbed a pair I had sitting by my Thoth statue. As
I took the candles from Thoth, I said to him, “Don’t worry man, I’ll make it up
to you. This year I’ll take you to Babalon Rising.” Every year
for Babalon Rising Festival we bring things to put on our group altar. This year I was
planning on bringing Thoth. So I pull three cards and I see the swords at the end
and I get a bit concerned. Then a voice in my head says, “This reading needs
more Thoth.” So I reach over again and grab my Mardi Gras beads from the Krewe
of Thoth, and place them in front of me.Then I pick up my Portals of Chaos cards and start to
shuffle. I think to myself, “I bet I pull the Thoth card.”I pull the card.
Blam! Sure as shit, the mighty Djhuety! My main man Thoth!
Can I get a praise Thoth!
So this story gets even fucking better.
At the exact same time as I am doing the tarot reading, unbeknownst to me, my dear friend and magical partner in crime, Frater Zentra El, received a call from the organizers of the Babalon Rising Festival.
They had
yet to write the main ritual for Saturday night and were wondering if he
could make one. The festival was in a transition year, having just
completed eleven years tied to the Kabbalah and the Tree of Life, they
were now starting with the theme of the tarot, with this year being the
Fool. Of course he said yes, and immediately went to his library to
consult Crowley’s magnum opus on the tarot – The Book of Thoth!
And so Zentra El came to me on the first day of the festival, and
together we wrote the main ritual. I think we did a good job, because
we summoned a Fool that ran through the festival playing many a prank.
That Fool rode us hard Saturday night, but it was worth it.
And yes, Thoth did enjoy himself at the festival. Especially when I got our entire camp to sing Surfin’ Bird in his honor.
