Garuda, about 1150, Bronze
Unknown artist, Cambodian
Both eagle and man, the Hindu deity Garuda (pronounced GAH-roo-dah) carries Vishnu (pronounced VISH-new) the Preserver when he descends to earth to restore balance in the universe. Originally, this figure would have had a figure of Vishnu mounted on its back. Made in Cambodia when the king was considered to be Vishnu’s earthly manifestation, this sculpture would have been perceived as particularly powerful.
