crown-and-glory:

the orphic hymn to dionysus

come, blessed dionysus, bull-faced god conceived in fire… you delight in bloody swords and in the holy maenads as you howl throughout olympus, o roaring and frenzied bacchos. armed with thyrsus and wrathful in the extreme, you are honoured by all the gods and by all the men who dwell upon the earth. come, blessed and leaping god, and bring much joy to all.

As depicted many times by Catholic artisans, he stood on his brother Lucifer, his foot planted on his victim’s head. Michael’s face bore a viscous snarl, as he readied his weapon to impale the Light-Bringer in the back. It reminded me of a line from 1984, “If you want a picture of the future, imagine a boot stamping on a human face—forever.”
