A Writer Goes Home
The book My Babylon is set in Kalamazoo, Michigan, the city I lived in for ten years. I miss Kalamazoo, terribly. It’s a college town, making it liberal, annoying, accepting, and diverse, all at the same time. I got a chance to spend a few hours there on Monday, and did a quick author’s tour of some of the locations I wrote about.
Of the Kalamazoo landmarks mentioned in the book, the most famous would be the caretaker’s home in Mountain Home Cemetery. It’s where the character Ezra lives and where he hosts his OTO rituals. A few urban legends surround the house. Many people I know claim to have visited it. Claim that the house can be rented, and that they were friends with the people that lived there. This came with the obligatory ghost stories complete with Ouija board contact and apparitions. I don’t know if any of that is true, but when I lived in Kzoo, it certainly looked as if someone lived there.
I’ll post some more pics if anyone’s interested. Remember, you can download a copy of My Babylon – Book One: Body, for free today (Tuesday, May 28, 2013).
