Odin gave his eye to acquire knowledge.

Chapter 1

Courage, it couldn’t come at a worse time.

— Courage (For Hugh MacLennan)

I looked into the eyes of the wolf. It sat some twenty-yards off from the make-shift pen they had put us in, a lattice of branches lashed together with bits of rope. I’ve always had keen eyesight, but no, no man can see a wolf’s eyes from such a distance. I only had the feeling. The weight of a connection. I’ve had this connection before, with wolves and serpents. I laughed, sitting there in the cold mud, waiting to die. My prayers had once again been answered. I was totally screwed.

Make no mistake, I am a bastard. Many men in my position have given themselves airs. I make no such vain-glorious claims. All I can say is that a presence has followed me all of my lives. I know what that presence is. It doesn’t make me great. It doesn’t make me better. In fact, it’s fucked me over more than anything else. That’s what he does.

Mid-World Arts

Have I told you about Mid-World Arts? I’ve been running a writer’s group for over four years now. Last December, a couple of us got together with an idea. We were sick of the way traditional publishers treated writers like crap. Plus, we knew there was an audience for our stuff, but maybe not wide enough for a publisher to bother with.

We decided to self-publish, and also help each other out while we did. Mid-World Arts is not a company, it’s not a traditional publisher, we call it an “authors’ studio” where writers can come together and share resources and cross-promote each other’s books.

The great thing about it for you the reader, is that you don’t have to suffer some of the crap often found in self-publishing. You don’t have to worry about buying a book that’s got massive spelling errors and shoddy grammar, because we check and re-check each other’s books before we publish.

I am proud to tell you about my fellow Mid-World artists because I know they write great books, and they helped make my books better.

Right now, Mid-World consists of myself (James L. Wilber), Stephan Michael Loy, and Dick Thomas. Steve already has an apocalyptic thriller called Last Days and Times, and an excellent short story collection called HarmonicRes. Plus, he has two more books coming out this month. Dick is hard at work on his paranormal horror story Ghostvision, which will be available by August.

Please take a moment to check out these great authors. If you like real people and not corporations providing your media, please read and review our books. If you want to help others make their dreams come true, please reblog this post.

Thanks!

Thank You!

I believe one of my tumblr followers (I suspect I know who), just left a review of My Babylon on Amazon. Thank you, and thanks to everyone who has downloaded it, and especially those who have read it. Thank you for bringing me one step closer to realizing my dreams of writing for a living.

My Babylon – Book Three: Risen, will be available May 28th in the Kindle store. On that day, Book One: Body, will be FREE.

If you have already read Book One, please leave a review on Amazon to help jumpstart the new promo. If you haven’t downloaded it yet, please grab a free copy on the 28th. Just downloading a copy helps moving up the rankings in Amazon, making it easier for others to find.

Of course, I’m only saying this because I do believe it is a book all of my followers would like. It’s been a labor of love and religious devotion for me.

Thank you again, with great sincerity.

A selection of incredible portraits from photographer Charles Fréger’s collection and book Wilder Mann, documenting the ancient pagan rites still being practiced throughout Europe today.

From the New York Times Lens blog:

About 10,000 years ago, humans began domesticating wild animals for both food and companionship. Over the course of centuries, animal species were bred for traits that made them docile and more useful to their masters. But as humans changed and fenced in animals, they were also domesticating themselves. The skills needed to survive in the wild were different than those needed to succeed in more complex social arrangements.

Mr Fréger was intrigued by the transformations of human being to beast that he witnessed in 18 European countries. They were, he said, celebrations of fertility, life and death and symbolized the complicated relationship between mankind and nature.
