Disc-shaped pieces made of bone, wood or ivory were used for playing a game called ‘tables’. From left to right: Bone game piece with grotesque design of bird or beast pecking at indistinguishable object, with neck of second bird or beast similarly engaged in background. The piece in the centre is decorated with concentric circles and band of ring and dot ornament. The piece on the right is decorated with a large hole in centre with concentric circles and one row of circle and dot ornament.

When the coals settled down to the red glow of hellfire, I got up, took up my bucket of sigils, and circled the brazier. My steps became a spasmodic, foot-pounding dance. I became half-aware of another pounding coming from the ceiling as well, but in my mind it wasn’t a signal, but a rhythm to drive me on. At every turn of the circle, I would reach in, take out one of the wadded sigils and fling it at the red coals, making flame leap forth.

Each time I did this, I said the magick word.

“Burn.”

With each passing minute the fire took on form, grew eyes, legs, a tail. It coiled in the pit of coals, a salamander, pink-white hot, with a flashing red tongue. My sigils spent, I bent over and grabbed my knees, gasping in breaths and choking on the smoke that filled the basement. It watched me. It didn’t know words, but it would know what I wanted.

Morgan, her voice deep and resonant, spoke the invocation between my repetitions.

“Isis, goddess of the fertile land, we call to thee. I call to thee.”

Isis nudjerit en enus bu. Amma Iset.

“Wife of slain Osiris. Mother of Horus ascendant. We call to thee. I call to thee.”

Isis nudjerit en enus bu. Amma Iset.

“Queen of love, queen of mercy. We call to thee. I call to thee.”

Isis nudjerit en enus bu. Amma Iset.

“She whose love brought Osiris back from the dead, we call to thee. I call to thee.

Isis nudjerit en enus bu. Amma Iset.

“Great Isis. We beg that our beloved be given reprieve. Let your husband refuse her. Let her stay with the living.”

Isis nudjerit en enus bu. Amma Iset.

The prayer spoken, we both fell silent as the echoing words faded. I felt another shift in the air. Closing my eyes, I detected a warm wind, the smell of running water, the sound of waves rippling, the gentle splash of oars. Extending my arms, palms down, I felt ghostly river reeds brush my fingertips.

She had come.
