The buzz came first, not unlike the buzz that came from the demons I had summoned during Aiden’s creation. The medallion at Kramer’s throat flashed blue, and light brighter than day revealed in black & white detail, the street, the trees, the houses.

Behind Kramer, a being unfurled itself into our reality. Ten feet tall, gray skinned, its face featureless except for golden orbs for eyes. It hovered above him on golden plated wings, and held a massive, flaming, two-handed sword.

It pointed its weapon at me. The Beast rose up to the challenge.

My legs went weak at the realization of the synchronicity. Saint Michael, made of white marble, wings outstretched, spear in hand, hovered above us. As depicted many times by Catholic artisans, he stood on his brother Lucifer, Michael’s foot planted on his victim’s head. The General’s face bore a vicious snarl, as he readied his weapon to impale the Light-Bringer in the back. It reminded me of a line from 1984, “If you want a picture of the future, imagine a boot stamping on a human face—forever.”

As I turned the card, I swear I heard a thunder-clap and felt the floor vibrate beneath me.

Flash. The Tower.

A tall white tower on a cliff, falling into ruin. Fire burns in three windows. Two of its occupants have leapt from it to their deaths on the rocks below. In the picture, a stroke of lightning has caused the tower’s collapse. Idiots fear the Death card, some fear The Devil. The worst card by far, if you ask me, is The Tower. It represents a stroke of truth that destroys all your preconceived notions. It tears down your beliefs, and leaves you defenseless. It will not be a gentle transition. This would be the outcome of our struggles.
