I’m not sure if I would define any art, “black” – connotation “evil or self-centered.” If what you’re reading does than you may want to ask yourself if that’s how you really view magick.
In any case, my overall recommendation is always first listen to this http://scrollofthoth.com/episode-1-peter-j-carroll-4/. You can ignore my blathering and just listen to the Peter J. Carroll part. And then read this http://www.amazon.com/Liber-Null-Psychonaut-Introduction-Chaos/dp/0877286396. Which can be had for free various places on the web, but you probably don’t need me to help you with that. (Please support Pope Pete by buying one of his more recent titles.)
For me, Peter J. Carroll has the profound ability to describe magick by its component parts and get to the essence. Everything else is just asthetics. Though magick is an art in my opinion, making the asthetics quite important.
Why ask anon?
