Gods of the Kiev pantheon: Simargl

Simargl was the god of fire and warmth. He was connected to the family hearth, but also the holy fires lit up to honor the gods. One could easily say Simargl was the personification of fire himself. Fires were very important, even holy, to pagan Slavs, and were used in most rituals. In human form he is sometimes portrayed as a warrior with seven heads. His brothers are Dažbog and Horz, gods of the Sun and the Moon, who were also considered forms of fire – fires in the sky. His sister was Mokoš, also the protector of the family. His animal forms are a dog/a dog with wings, a serpent/dragon, and a wolf.
