Aleister Crowley was an exceptional magician, and his books remain the best written about practical magick. The Ordo Templi Orientis seemed a likely choice.This is almost exactly what I picture when I picture everything I don’t like about Thelema, and (almost) everything I disagree with about Thelema.
Not to disregard my Thelemic friends. A few people don’t define a tradition, certainly one lodge doesn’t define a philosophy. But, it underscores a lot of my problems with the organization.
Today is Juneteenth, which commemorates the ending of slavery in Texas on June 19, 1865. Although the Emancipation Proclamation was issued by Abraham Lincoln on January 1, 1863, it was not enforced in the state of Texas due to a lack of Union troop presence and enforcement in the confederate state.
However on June 19, 1865, Union soldiers led by Major General Gordon Granger and his regiment entered Galveston, Texas to override the resistance to the law and to enforce the Executive Orders. Union Major-General Gordon Granger read General Orders, No.3 to the people of Galveston. It stated:
“The people of Texas are informed that, in accordance with a proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free. This involves an absolute equality of personal rights and rights of property between former masters and slaves, and the connection heretofore existing between them becomes that between employer and hired labor. The freedmen are advised to remain quietly at their present homes and work for wages. They are informed that they will not be allowed to collect at military posts and that they will not be supported in idleness either there or elsewhere.”
Since 1865 black Americans have regarded June 19th as the official emancipation day, and on January 1, 1980, the state of Texas proclaimed June 19 an official state holiday thanks to the African American state legislator Al Edwards.
My personal random reflections on Sigil Magic based on experience.
– Know that you need to detach/surrender vs. “forget”. – Believe that the universe is already on it’s way to fulfilling it. So shut up and stop worrying you silly child you.
-Acknowledge the realm of possibility before undertaking the sigil – So no to having gold bars suddenly descending from the heavens/developing Astral Projection overnight/Levitation/Telekinesis/Being a supahstah/seeing fairies in your flower garden because you want to feel happy and freeeeeeeee.
-Think of what you want carefully – SO IMPORTANT. Sometimes we really don’t want what we ‘think’ we want. Always contemplate and meditate on your desires first and see if you really need it.
-You WILL ALWAYS get what you expect to receive – And it is always in a way you least expect. Expect success, you will get it. Expect failure, you will get it as well.
-There are actually no rules – only your beliefs limit you

I am unashamed to say that this woman, Bianca Beauchamp, is one of my main mental images of Babalon.
She is unabashedly fake. Totally upfront abut her body modification. She totally admits that what she does is porn meant for titillation. She’s been doing it and enjoying it for almost 20 years.
To be sure, she is not my ideal of feminine beauty. She’s too skinny for me (and that’s for ME and if you have other ideals of beauty that’s fine too). But she is an ideal of a time and a culture.
