Ye olde Codex Gigas, also known as “Djävulsbibeln“ (The Devil’s Bible) was a spoils of war of Sweden from Czech Republic during the Thirty Years’ War. It is the largest medieval manuscript and is called the Devil’s Bible due to the image of a devil inside of it as well as the legend that surrounds it. The legend tells the tale of a doomed monk that promised as penitence for breaking his vows to write in one night a manuscript that would encompass all world’s knowledge. At midnight he pretty much figured that he was fucked right up the ass so he made a pact with the Devil to finish the book in exchange for his soul. Also the Devil obviously wanted his picture in the work as well. Technically the book contains the Latin Vulgate and other historical documents. So, as far as magick is concerned. How did that fellow imitate into that order with no one there to accept him. Call me clueless but I’m curious and not judging. I would just love the knowledge. Thank you.

Many orders allow self-initiation. The magician Chic Cicero has spent much of his life teaching self-initiation methods for the Golden Dawn. I have friends who have self-initiated into mystery cults when called by certain deities. In fact, if there is no organization that follows a particular path, self-initiation is the only recourse.

There is much debate within the magical community on the validity and usefulness of self-initiation.

Personally, I believe self-initiation is valid and useful, but that group initiation provides certain elements that cannot be replicated. It can also be said that group initiation erodes a magician’s center of self and personal relationship with deity. 

It’s up to the magician to determine which type of initiation is more useful to them at the time.

A dream is a personal experience of that deep, dark ground that is the support of our conscious lives, and a myth is the society’s dream. The myth is the public dream and the dream is the private myth. If your private myth, your dream, happens to coincide with that of the society, you are in good accord with your group. If it isn’t, you’ve got an adventure in the dark forest ahead of you.
