Doing It – Update

UPDATE – Matchmaker has reached 3,600 on the list of free Kindle books in just 15 hours! Please help me get it to the top 1,000 and I will extend the promotion another day and shoot for the top 100!

There’s a lot of posts on tumblr saying you should cast away the daily grind and follow your dreams. Well, I’m doing it. I have decided to make writing my career. It’s my dream come true. If you could help someone do that, with minimal effort, would you?

Sunday, May 5th, is my birthday. To celebrate, both book one of my serialized novel, My Babylon, and my short story Matchmaker, will be FREE on Amazon. I appreciate all well wishes. However, I really want just one thing for my birthday – reviews.

Please take the time to download a copy. Just downloading it makes it climb a little higher on the Amazon rankings, making it easier to find.

After downloading, PLEASE leave an honest review. Reviews are the only way independent authors get noticed. We have the ability to lessen the power of the gatekeepers, and promote the media we like. Use it!

You can also leave reviews on iTunes for my podcasts, Scroll of Thoth, and Geeks Out After Dark.

And don’t forget those Facebook shares and likes, and twitter mentions, that Amazon and all those pages have to help spread the word. You can even reblog this post.

I appreciate so much everyone who has helped me with this. All of the people I follow on tumblr have been inspirational. Thank you doing what you do.

Dream Journal

10/30-10/31

I don’t have any excuses for not keeping up on my dream journal, except I’ve been enjoying the season. I did have a great zombie dream last night I want to share. As an added bonus, it also had vampires and a necromancer.

I was a leader of a group of survivors. The dream had interesting details. I remember that me and the other leaders would hold council meetings every evening to discuss our situation, and whether or not we have attracted too much attention and should move on.

We would find safe areas and fortify them. I remember enjoying how the increased sense of safety would help the less capable of our group. I especially enjoyed visiting the children and seeing their drawings. One time, a little girl drew a gold sparkly piece of calligraphy that said “love.” I knew then that I had to make our situation as safe as possible.

Things turned bad, of course. At these point in the dream I switched perspectives and was no longer a participant, but just an observer. I watched a group of vampire hunters enter a nearby building. After discovering a nest of them, they burned the building down, but neglected to go down into the basement. After that, the vampires chased them back to our camp, slaughtering a few of our group.

We returned the next day and opened up the basement to sunlight. This destroyed a few more, but at the council meeting that night, we were pretty sure that some of them escaped.

As if on cue, a huge horde of zombies attacked. We did pretty well, until the zombies started talking. This freaked out most of our group and sent them into a route.

I encountered one of the new talking zombies. It told me that we had invoked it’s anger, and they would kill us all for our offense. It was then that I realized one of the surviving vampires was a necromancer, controlling the zombie hordes. This actually gave me hope, as I noticed the zombies being directly controlled by the necromancer were even less coordinated and vulnerable to melee attacks. I could just walk up to them and stick them in the eye with a small shiv.

Too bad it ended there. Yeah, the whole thing was obviously the product of my pop/geek culture saturated brain, but it was a lot of fun. A damn good dream for Devil’s Night.

Happy Halloween!

I watched the new episode of the Walking Dead last night, and was hoping for some good zombie dreams. No such luck. At least I didn’t dream about a hotel.

The only thing I remember is riding an old grey dirt bike through the woods. It was autumn, with leaves all around. At one point I ran out of gas and had to push it up a long, almost unending hill.

Swore I would not record another dream with a hotel in it, but this one did not really involve the hotel itself.

It started out as a recurring dream, where I go to the GenCon gaming convention with my friends. It is being held in this strange futuristic hotel complex with massive tall buildings with glass elevators running up and down.

Then we leave, and we have so much stuff we have to rent a trailer for the drive home. I remember driving down a dark highway, and seeing the trailer detach form the hitch. It’s still attached by the chains though, and sways back and forth behind me. We have to stop, and we end off going to this old mental asylum.

The asylum is set up in a series of cabins. This is where the perspective of my dream changes where I am watching what happens to the inhabitants of the asylum. I see a girl, middle school age, very goth in a Victorian dress. The others at the asylum refuse to let them stay in their cabin because she is constantly haunted by ghosts. During the night, she must put up with their shrieks and wails, and banging on the cabin.

In the morning, a group of doctors come in to talk about her psychosis. During the interview, she discovers that she can summon the ghosts, which the doctors find disconcerting, but they still treat her as a patient.

After her interview, she sees some of the other children being kept in the asylum, a boy and a girl. They are dressed in Victorian-goth as well, but they are laughing and smiling. The ghost-girl takes offense at this, and summons the ghosts to attack them and they are frightened off.

This is where I come back into the dream, except I am Neil Gaimen. I tell her that she must let people be who they want to be, even if they don’t treat her the same.

I woke up, realized I was once again dreaming about a hotel, and decided not to write down the details. I vaguely remember my wife working as a waitress, and a strange unisex bathroom.

I’m really sick of dreaming about hotels. I know it’s subconscious guilt about not having a job. I would be happy to go the rest of my life without working at another fucking hotel.

I dreamt that my wife threw a birthday party for me. Many of my old friends showed up, people I have not seen for months or years.

At the risk of sounding Stephen Colbert, what delighted me the most was that my few African American friends made it to the party. Living in this segregated society, I have had little opportunity to make friends outside my ethnic group. I have always cherished those friendships, because they provided me with a different perspective on things.

Yeah, I’ve been slacking, but I took notes. Here’s two day’s worth.

10/03-10/04/11

I dreamt of matryoska (Russian nesting dolls). I only recall the dream vaguely, but in some way the dolls were punching holes in the fabric of the universe.

10/04-10/05/11

This one is much more convoluted. I dreamt that I worked in a warehouse that shipped White Wolf books. The cavernous warehouse held many catwalks. On a few of the catwalks, Japanese families would be sitting around a low table having a formal dinner. The workers needed to walk around them.

The management instituted several “get to know your fellow employee” ideas. For this, the printers each of us had for labels would occasionally print out character sheets detailing our co-workers. One interesting thing on the sheets was a an entry for “What devil do you serve?”

After work, they set up banquet tables for the employees to have dinner. The women sitting next to me kept asking me out.

Sadly, this combines two recent jobs I’ve had, working in a warehouse (motorcycle parts, not books) and working at a hotel. Fuck I hate dreaming about work.

I dreamt I was part of a panel, we actually called ourselves an inquisition. Just as you see on TV, a group of people behind a long dais, each one with a gavel. Except we were not dressed as judges but in regular street clothes. We were there to decide the fate of rich executives who had devastated our economy.

I guess my recent activist activities have bled over into my subconscious. No, I don’t hope it goes down like this. Maybe some people need to be brought to trial, but not an “inquisition.”

Apparently in my dream world, the music industry is pretty fucked up.

I dreamt I went to go visit my brother. He was still living in my mom’s old house by the lake. At one point I get left with some of his friends, guys I did not recognize at all. It was one of those uncomfortable moments were you must socialize with people you know you have very little in common with.

The the conversation turned to music. These guys listened to a lot of country, which I pretty much despise. When they asked me what I listened to, to try and fit in, I mentioned I liked John Cougar Mellencamp. (This is a bit of a stretch. In my 135 GB of music I have not one song my JCM. I don’t think I’ve heard one in years. I do, however, appreciate his populist political stance. He’s a tolerable rock & roll musician. I wouldn’t run screaming from a place playing his music.)

After admitting this, one of the guys mentioned that John Cougar Mellencamp had teamed up with David Byrne, and they now play music with the remaining members of the Grateful Dead.

I don’t remember anything else from this dream, but I’d pay money to see that act.
