I recently had a talk with my local Thelemic guru. He says that the Star Ruby is not a replacement for banishing. It’s more of a marshaling of your magical forces to go out and do your Will. This makes sense to me in the way the ritual is performed and how it “feels.”

I think banishing every day is good for about a month or so. Then, I scale it back. Too much banishing makes me feel like I am washing away too much of my own personality and force.

I say, keep track of your own results. Keep doing what you’re doing until it’s less productive. Then consider changing things up.

Oh man, don’t be like me. I’m a bad example.

Right now my practice consists of daily devotions. Examples are buying roses for the Goddess Babalon, saying prayers to Thoth before I write, and thanking him when I am done, also the things I post on tumblr.

Anything marked, “Ave Babalon,” or “I am thy writing tablet, oh Thoth, and I have brought unto thee, thine jar,” are devotions.

I have been performing the Star ruby every night, and banish weekly.

I also develop specific magical rituals to obtain specific results. Like last night when I performed a ritual to help sell my book.

I am not currently keeping a magical record like I should.Nor am I keeping a dream journal.

That’s bad. Don’t be like me 😉

I don’t totally agree with you that mental rituals are more effective. I think they are the same thing in the end. They may seem more practical, but mental rituals require prolonged  intense concentration, that can sometimes be replaced with a simple object.

We are currently physical beings. I don’t think there’s any way to escape that. In such, our consciousness understands physical actions and symbols.

I’m not against purely mental rituals. If that works for you, use it. It’s a very Eastern approach.

I am, however, a Westerner. I was raised that way, and I think in Western ways. We in the West are materialistic. Our magick tends to be much more materialistic as a reflection of the culture. Take alchemy, It is an entire system based on the metaphor of transmuting material things.

In essence, both are ways at getting at the same thing. They both have their advantages and disadvantages.
